Notes from The Virtual WallSP5 Jack Wolfe was a crew chief on the UH-1H Huey helicopters operated by the 254th Medical Detachment of the 498th Medical Company. He was wounded in action and died of his wounds on 27 June 1970. According to the casualty records, he started his tour of duty on 01 May 1967 ... if that date is accurate - and the memorial above implies that it is - he had been in Vietnam for 1,152 days or 38-1/2 months at the time of his death. The Virtual Wall cannot identify the incident in which SP5 Wolfe was injured. The most recent known 254th incident was on 15 May 1970, six weeks earlier. On that date UH-1H tail number 69-15015 was hit by two B-40 rocket propelled grenades while on a medevac mission. One crewman, flight medic SP5 Theodore W. High, was killed and the other three crewmen wounded. Jack Wolfe may have been one of the three.
After completion of Basic Training and helicopter repairman schooling, Sgt Wolfe was assigned to duty in Germany. He volunteered for reassignment to Vietnam, arriving in country 01 May 1967. He extended his tour at least three times, visiting home in between tours of duty. It appears that Sergeant Wolfe may have fudged a bit in order to enter the Army. Official records give his date of birth as 20 January 1948, but his grave marker says 20 January 1949. While his length of service is not recorded, he was three months past his "real" 18th birthday when he arrived in Vietnam ... and could not have been much, if any, past his 17th birthday when he entered the Army. |
