The database page for Richard Edwin Wilson
The photograph is of a friend of mine named Richard Wilson. We were both in B Company, 1st AmTrac Bn, operating mostly in Quang Nam. I was an MOS 1833 crew chief in the HQ Plt. Wilson was wounded while riding on top of an AmTrac returning to Marble Mountain from some point closer to Chu Lai. He died on the way back. I was not with the patrol but I was there when the tractor with Wilson aboard returned to the Marble Mountain checkpoint. The ironic thing that I remember clearly is that Wilson always wore a helmet and flak jacket when in the field. Most of the rest of us never did because they were awkward and caught on things while moving through the P5's hatches. There were a lot of people on top of that vehicle that were not wearing protective gear ... but only Wilson was killed that day.
