19 Sep 2001 Henry was in flight school at Ft. Rucker with my husband. He and his wife Sue were good friends of ours and expecting their first child. Henry went to Vietnam in March of 1969 and was killed while on a mission to locate a downed helicopter pilot. He was a super-fine man, filled with integrity and humor. He is sorely missed by all of us who knew him. His son David still mourns not knowing his father. A memorial from a family friend, Dorcus Shreve E-mail address is not available.

A Note from The Virtual Wall The OV-1A Mohawk battlefield surveillance aircraft was deployed to Vietnam with three units - what became the 73rd Aviation Company (Air Surveillance) and two Air Surveillance and Targeting (ASTA) platoons, one each with the 1st Cavalry and the 1st Infantry Divisions. In January 1969 The ASTA platoons were temporarily attached to the 73d Aviation Company for a 90 day experiment, which proved successful and it was decided to permanently incorporate the ASTA platoons and assets into the 73rd Avn Co. However, the incorporation of the ASTA platoons was not finalized until November 1969. In the meantime, the men assigned to the ASTA Platoon, 11th Aviation Company, and the ASTA Platoon, B Company, 1st Aviation Battalion, lived, worked, and flew as members of the 73rd Aviation Company. Lieutenant Henry O. Wilhoite actually was assigned to the 1st Cav's ASTA Platoon, but he and Cpl John P. Madden of the 73rd Avn Co were in a 73rd Avn Co aircraft, OV-1C tail number 67-18913, when they crashed into Gin Ray Mountain while flying a Red Haze mission during inclement weather. Both men died in the accident.
