Whit, I'm gonna have that beer with you one day, I haven't forgotten. Thirty years later and I still miss you.
LCpl Paul M. Jungel 09 Mar 2007 Whit, In a few days it'll be the 37th anniversary of your death ... it seems but a blink of an eye since you've been gone but so much has happened. You'd be proud of your buddy and I can't help but wonder what you would be like too, now some 30 plus years removed from the war. You're in my thoughts and prayers daily, my friend and my brother. Keep your powder dry and your weapon clean.
Semper Fi, 07 Aug 2007 Whit, I finally got to meet your family after some 37 years and they treated me like part of the family. I told you we'd get back together and somehow I have think you were there when we all got together back on the farm. You're still remembered, missed, and loved, my friend. Rest in Peace, your battles are over, and your weapon can be put away ... you've done your duty and we all proud of you.

A Note from The Virtual WallThe 2nd Combined Action Group's diary for March 1970 contains the following entry:"24 Mar 70 - A CACO 2-7 vehicle medevac for 1 Vietnamese civilian suffering from convulsions received 5 ChiCom grenades and automatic weapons fire from an unknown size enemy force while proceeding south on [Highway] QL-1 6.5 kilometers northeast of Dien Ban District Headquarters. The medevac team returned organic weapons fire causing the enemy to withdraw in an unknown direction. One USMC was KIA, 2 USMC were WIA, and the M151 [Jeep] received major repairable damage in the contact. 1 USMC WIA and the Vietnamese were medevaced by helicopter to NSA Hospital..."The Marine killed in this incident was Sergeant Kenneth E. Whitmer. LCpl Frank W. Dawson of Cleveland, Ohio, who died 24 March of grenade wounds, may be the evacuated Marine but that has not been confirmed. |
