David Whitehill was flying an A-37 as escort to a C-123 RANCH HAND spray aircraft near Rang Rang, 30-some miles northeast of Bien Hoa. When the C-123 came under fire, Whitehill attacked the gun position. On his third pass he apparently was hit by ground fire - he failed to pull out and crashed near the gun site.

We haven't forgotten him.

From one who remembers,
but wishes to remain anonymous.

What can I say?
Words are such feeble things
That leave my thoughts unsatisfied.
Yet I can say I know.
Who has not known the bitter cup
That will not pass,
Knows not the taste of love.
The cry goes up, but why, but why?
The answer comes a still small voice,
Your God alone knows what He does
And so before in grief you sink
Stop, catch one breath and think
What sweep of wings has He
Loosed in eternal liberty
And God's companionship.
So take your prayers
And wring them dry of tears
And lift them up pure with love
Forever after.
