Remembered, because you were always so kind to all the kids in Lee, Ma. You treated us all as if we were important. I still remember seeing your white convertible coming down the street, you would wave to us and speak to us by name. You made a very sad little girl happy every time you acknowleged her. I was going to marry you when I grew up.

You were a friend to all.

I think of Whalen and several others often.

I was young and a squad leader in the first platoon that day when our platoon leader came by my position on his way to the second platoon. Michael Whalen, Frank Johnson, and I had been talking about what was in front of us, at the same time keeping our heads down. Whalen and Frank volunteered to go with the Lt. to the 2nd platoon 75 yards away. I never saw the Lt. or Whalen again. The Lt. went home with one less finger and Mike was killed trying to save several lives.

The next day as we advanced through the small rice paddy, where 5 had fallen, Frank pointed out were and what had taken place the previous day. Mike had crawled out into the paddy, while taking fire from a hedge row, to try and save several guys from the second platoon.

Mike always had a positive friendly attitude. Everyone in our platoon knew they could count on him no matter what. I have not forgotten Michael Whalen.
