A Note from The Virtual WallOn 29 Sep 1966 Major Saul Waxman and 1stLt J. E. Glover were flying a night armned recon mission in F-4C tail number 64-0736. Their aircraft was hit by AAA fire while attacking a ferry about 35 miles northwest of Dong Ha. Waxman turned the aircraft south toward hilly terrain better suited for escape and evasion where both men ejected from the damaged F-4. 1stLt Glover was picked up alive, but Major Waxman died during the ejection. His body was found and recovered by a BRIGHT LIGHT team inserted by helicopter. The Air Force Killed in Action listing indicates Major Waxman was assigned to the "4520 COM SQ", which might be the 4520th Communications Squadron or a garbled entry for the 4520th Combat Crew Training Wing at Nellis AFB, Nevada - Major Waxman is known to have served at Nellis before being assigned to Vietnam. |
