Scotty Watts and Wilbert D. Downhour, both of San Angelo, Texas enlisted in the Army under the "Buddy Program" on June 4, 1964. Following basic training at Fort Polk, LA, they both were assigned to AIT at Fort Knox, Kentucky, to become Armored Crewman. Scott then decided to apply for OCS. Upon successful completion of OCS, he was commissioned as a 2LT in Infantry. His buddy Downhour served two tours in Vietnam as a tank crewman. Watts served two tours in Vietnam as a Infantry Officer. Scotty won the Bronze Star with "V" device for exposing himself to hostile fire while crossing a open field to resuce a wounded soldier. He was later killed in action. Scotty was a San Angelo Central High School graduate and he attended San Angelo College (now Angelo State University). He enjoyed playing the guitar. Scott is remembered by the Tom Green County Area Vietnam Memorial in San Angelo as well as by the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial located at the Midland International Airport, Midland, Texas.
