A Note from The Virtual WallLate in the afternoon of 10 Aug 1966 Staff Sergeant Robert Walsh volunteered to fly as a gunner on an emergency resupply and medevac mission, probably in support of 1st Battalion, 5th Marines (see HN Lawrence T. Steiner). While the casualty file indicates he died in a helicopter crash, he did not - but he was killed on the mission. His actions before his death warranted a posthumous Silver Star, the third highest award for valor in combat. Information on the incident can be found on the Pop-A-Smoke site |
