A Note from The Virtual Wall

SP4 Veach joined the 200th Assault Support Helicopter Company on 05 Dec 1966 while the unit was still at Fort Benning, Georgia, and deployed with the company to Vietnam, arriving on 15 March 1967. The 200th ASHC became part of the 214th Avn Bn when that unit was organized on 17 April 1967, was later transferred to the 308th Avn Bn, and finally was reorganized as Company A, 159th Avn Bn on 01 July 1968.

According to the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots' Association database, SP4 Veach was killed while flying as a door gunner in UH-1B tail number 62-04587, an aircraft belonging to the 937th Engineer Group. The VHPA database summary says

"Aircraft was at a hover when the nose rose into the air. The tail rotor struck the ground. The aircraft rolled on its left side, crashed and burned. Analysis revealed improper maintenance was done by personnel not authorized to perform it and improper maintenance supervision."
Four of the five men aboard survived the incident; SP4 Veach did not.
