Well, David, I was surprised to learn that you and my friend Tom Shaw share the same birthday 3/28, though different years (Tom 1948 and you 1951). I'm glad you will be together to celebrate it, as you have over the last 30 years. Your crash dates are also very close: Tom, 4/27/72, and you, 4/14/72 - it's almost as though you walked thru the "Doors" together, both ways. We think of you and remember you - you will not be forgotten. Your stories will live on and on through our children and our grandchildren, and on and on from there. Hoist a toast together for us on the 28th. You will be on our minds. Happy Birthday to you and Tom.

From a friend of the 129th AHC.

As the AC on your last mission I want to say that I've thought of you every day since April 14, 1972. You were a brave man, an excellent crew chief, and a good guy. I want to thank you for your sacrifice, standing up to return fire twice after your initial wound. I am sorry that I did not break contact after your initial wound. I hope to see you again.

From the Aircraft Commander on David's last mission.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

SP4 David Stamper was killed during a combat assault in the An Khe Pass, about 1 kilometer south-southeast of Binh Khe village. He is buried in Highland Memorial Gardens, Godby, West Virginia.

"DLF" expresses the belief that SP4 Stamper was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the assault. On another site, Thomas Pedersen, a pilot in the aircraft behind DLF's, says "I believe he was recommended for the Silver Star for bravery." Regretably, The Virtual Wall cannot determine if SP4 Stamper was actually awarded that decoration.
