From another friend. |
I served with "Smokey" during my tour in VietNam. He was assigned to my squad in the 2nd Platoon of Delta, 1/26 after he arrived in country. I was wounded shortly after he was hit in early August of 1969 and learned of his death upon arrival at St. Albans Naval Hospital in NYC some weeks thereafter. He was a true friend who showed maturity and calm under fire. I think of him often as the one Marine who could be counted on to have a friendly word of encouragement no matter how grim the situation. He lifted others' spirits with his own positive attitude. I am proud to have known and served with him. His spirit lives in all that knew him.
