My father was lost to us on July 27, 1971. When his body was returned to us he was laid to rest on August 9, 1971, my 9th birthday. Time has helped to heal the pain but it has not diminished the memory of a good man. He is missed daily by my mother and I and he will never be forgotten. A few years ago I had the great fortune of talking to a man my father called "Lucky". He was my father's point man and he was with him when he lost his life. He told me of the great respect that he and the other men in his platoon had for my father and that meant so very much to me. I wish that I could thank each of them personally one day for making sure that my father did come home. I know today that he walks with our Lord and that knowledge alone helps me daily with the thoughts I have of him. I know that my father would be very proud of each of the men and women that fought and died in Vietnam as am I.
To all of you that will never forget: |
