22 Dec 2004 Silvy, We started our Marine Corps tour together at Parris Island, Platoon 3008, October 1968. Young, strong and full of fire, we were going to get it done. I have been trying to find the rest of our platoon and slowly but assuredly I am getting there. I know you are in good company because God is about Blessing us because He loves us so. Say hi to Bruce Carter (MOH 8/7/69), D. W. Gill (11/12/69), Dennis Havelin and Dickie Hudson, who made it home but died later in life and the rest of the "Third Herd" who are standing "at ease" with you in Heaven. You guys are a part of a proud history but more importantly, you are in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved you forever. Notes from The Virtual Wall On 21 September 1969 Fire Support Base Russell, northwest of the Rockpile and just south of the DMZ, was being shut down. The fortifications and excess munitions were being prepared for destruction in place when an accidental explosion killed four men and wounded fifteen others. The four dead included LCpl Leonel M. Silveira, Pfc Grover Bowen , and two Vietnamese scouts. One of the wounded, Pfc James W. Jackson , was evacuated with the other wounded to the US military hospital at Quang Tri City - where he simply and inexplicably disappeared. LCpl Silveira and Pfc Bowen are remembered by their brothers-in-arms on the "Thundering Third" Memorial In his Addendum Mr. Booker names two other Marines who died in Vietnam. They are LCpl Donald W. Gill, Alexandria, VA, died of wounds 11/12/1969; Alpha 1/5 Pfc Bruce W. Carter, Miami Springs, FL, killed in action 08/07/1969; Hotel 2/3 (Medal of Honor)
