A Note from The Virtual Wall

Twentyfour men died when a C-7A (tail number 63-9753) collided with a CH-47A (tail number 66-19041) near Camp Evans on 03 Oct 1968.

The CH-47, from Company A, 228th ASHB, was on a regular shuttle run from LZ Nancy to Camp Evans, while the C-7A, from the 537th Tac Airlift Sqdn, had just taken off from Camp Evans. As the C-7A climbed through 1100 feet in an ascending right turn it hit the CH-47. The helicopter's rotor slashed through the C-7's cockpit, killing both pilots instantly. The C-7A then spiralled into the ground, killing all aboard - 4 Air Force crewman and 9 Army passengers. The CH-47 broke up in flight, with the main fuselage section dropping almost vertically to the ground, where it exploded and burned. Five crewmen and six passengers aboard the CH-47 died. All of the Army casualties were from the 1st Cavalry Division.
