My older brother, Lawrence G. "Larry" Helm (10/10/1946-05/15/2000) was a classmate of yours at Redford High School, Class of 1964. Your chance meeting "In Country" in mid-April 1967 had a deep effect on him; he may have been the last friendly face from home that you saw. He never forgot you, so neither will I. I hope you've found each other once again.

Dear Gary, I'm not sure what to say at this time. It's been 35 years since you were killed on that night of 21 April 1967. I was your platoon leader ... my name is Richard C. Anderson. I teach school back here in my hometown of Portville, NY. I got married 9 days after I got home from Vietnam to my college sweetheart, Lee. We have two great boys and we are so blessed. Thirty-five years seems so long ago but that fateful night on Operation Union seems like it was only a couple of months ago. I talk with the Lord every day as I walk to school and I remember all of you guys by name who died from my platoon on that horrible night. Please say hello to the six who died and let them know that when I get there, you guys will be the first I look for. God bless you Gary, I love you.

I hope you are at peace, old friend. Its been about 38-39 years since we first met. You were a very entertaining man and I still think about you, even after all these years. Your name still comes up when my brother Paul (Bud) and I get to talking about the old days, especially when Interlachen State Park memories abound. You will never be forgotten and your passing was not in vain. You have gone to a better place and I'm positive we will meet again, so hold a place for me by the campfire, tune up the guitar, and get ready to jam.
