10 Feb 2001 David, after 30+ years, I still think about you in Civil Air Patrol, Harlingen High School and leaving before your senior year for the Army. Before I knew it, you were dead. My Dad informed me after reading the paper one day when I was preparing for school. Four years later, my Dad would ask me to stay at Texas A&M, rather than quiting at Christmas and go off to Vietnam as a door-gunner -- as you did. Rest in Peace, David. I won't let go of your memory and what you did for your country. Wish I could have gone to your folks and expressed my friendship with you and my sorrow for their loss. Rest in Peace. Notes from The Virtual Wall On 10 July 1970, SP4 David Schultz was a door gunner aboard a CH-47A, tail number 65-07999, of the 242nd ASHC. The aircraft had picked up a full load of soldiers at a firebase nicknamed "the Mushroom" because it was located in a mushroom-shaped loop of a river. As the aircraft lifted off it was hit in the fuselage by a rocket-propelled grenade. The fuselage broke apart, with the cockpit section falling separately from the main fuselage. When the fuselage section hit ground it caught fire. Seven men died as a result, some in the incident itself and some later of injuries recieved. The seven men were 242nd ASHC aircrew: SP4 Ross E. Bedient, Valois, NY, flight engineer, died 07/13/1970 SP4 David P. Schultz, Harlingen, TX, gunner Passengers: SFC Thomas A. Campbell, York, AL, B/2/12th Infantry SSG Carey J. Pratt, Kokomo, IN, D/2/14th Infantry, died 07/12/1970 SGT Robert L. Oldham, Caldwell, TX, D/2/12th Infantry SGT Dennis K. Martin, Cedar Rapids, IA, D/2/14th Infantry SP4 Michael P. Vullo, Alhambra, CA, HHC, 725th Maint Bn, died 07/11/1970
