A Note from The Virtual WallPFC William J. Scannell was wounded in action on 28 August 1968 and died of his injuries on 12 Sep 1970 - two years afterwards. More than a decade later, when the Services compiled the lists of Vietnam War casualties some men who had died of wounds were overlooked - and William J. Scannell was one of them. His name was added to the Wall in 2003:
Also added last year were the names of Donald Carson and William J. Scannell who died in action during the war. Their names had been inadvertently left off the wall.
The Defense Department reviews medical records to determine if a Vietnam veteran's death was war-related, thus entitling him to a place on the wall, Stout wrote.
Since 1982, when the memorial was dedicated, 296 names have been added.
So far, the names of 58,235 men and women who died in action or are missing in action have been etched into the wall.
And there will be more.
