After serving in the Air Force from 1964-72, I made a special trip to see my aunt and uncle, who had lost their only child three years earlier. They were still totally devastated. Notes from The Virtual WallOn 10 July 1970, Staff Sergeant Carey Pratt was a passenger aboard a CH-47A, tail number 65-07999, of the 242nd ASHC. The aircraft had picked up a load of soldiers at a firebase nicknamed "the Mushroom" because it was located in a mushroom-shaped loop of a river. As the aircraft lifted off it was hit in the fuselage by a rocket-propelled grenade. The fuselage broke apart, with the cockpit section falling away from the main fuselage. When the fuselage section hit ground it caught fire. Seven men died as a result, some in the incident itself and some later of injuries received. The seven men were
