On the evening of March 7, 1971, Barry was the aircraft commander of a AH-1G (hull number 69-16438) helicopter which was participating in a reconnaissance mission 12 miles southwest of Quang Tri City in Quang Tri Province, Republic of Viet Nam. For anyone interested Hyrum Barry Port is buried in the Wenatchee, Chelan County, Washington cemetery next to his brother Scott Port. The location is the northwest corner just east of the mausoleum building.

I am interested in making contact with anyone who knew Barry.

I must have passed you hundreds of times in the halls of Wenatchee High School, and watched you play football for the Cougars. I didn't really know you - but I knew your brother, Tony, a classmate of mine.

If we could retrace our steps (knowing what we know now), I would have stopped you in the hall and thanked you (little compensation, to be sure!) for what you would do... for me, for us, for America.

Thank you, Barry.

Forty summers have passed, Barry, since we saw you last, before you put on the uniform and earned your Silver Wings.

Your friends remember you still with affection and respect for a young man of honor and a life lived well.

Fly high, Barry, and farewell.
