A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 20 March 1966 the TICONDEROGA was providing air support in southern South Vietnam. A section of A-4s was called in to attack a VC troop concentration near Vinh Binh, in the Mekong Delat about 25 miles south of Saigon. LTJG Pinneker, flying wing in A-4C BuNo 145081, was cleared in for his second run, released napalm cannisters - and flew on until he hit a grove of trees, whereupon the aircraft disintegrated. The cause of the crash was unknown, although it was suspected that Pinneker may have been hit by ground fire or his aircraft damaged to the point he was unable to pull up.
