I visited the Vietnam Moving Wall today (8/26/06) in Elmira, NY. I was one of Hardy Peeples' six roommates in the old French Seminary in My Tho when he was killed. I am David Lyons, a Ltjg in the Navy Civil Engineering Corps at the time ... the only Navy person living with his advisory group. My task was to supervise the construction of the first US Army base in The Mekong Delta at Dong Tam. What a great, rock hard, handsome man he was. I sent probably the last picture taken of Hardy to his widow in Alice, Texas and his baby (boy?) right after it happened. He was participating in a parade in My Tho. I took probably 700 slides with a small pocket camera during my almost year-long service in My Tho. I have often wondered how his parents, wife and son are doing now. MSG Harry Mahoney, who was in the jeep with Hardy, was also rock hard and very professional. I am now a retired Corning Inc. Engineering Manager and recently widowed two years ago. I wrote my wife Joanne every day from My Tho. My now significant other, Christine Chapman, attended with me today and was overcome, as I was, with emotion... I also visited the real Wall in Washington right after it was erected some 20+ years ago and found Hardy's name. Today, I left one of my prized dahlias at the foot of his panel. It was very moving for me and now even more when I found his name and ability to E-mail someone when I Goggled his name.
