Gary was my uncle. I think of you often, Gary, and miss you. You were taken from this world much too soon. God Bless You always.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 22 June 1970 B Company, 4/21st Infantry, lost three men to a mine while on patrol 4 kilometers east of Duc Pho:
  • SP4 Gary L. Peat, Rewey, WI;
  • SP4 Joseph M. Turowski, Baltimore, MD; and
  • PFC Robert W. Gumbert, New Richmond, OH.
The explosion was triggered by PFC Gumbert, who was walking point, and was a massive one, leaving a crater 4-1/2 feet deep and 12 feet wide. Although PFC Gumbert's tattered wallet and a few personal effects were found, the explosion had fragmented his body beyond identification. SP4 Peat, who was immediately behind PFC Gumbert, and third-in-line SP4 Turowski were killed as well, but both men could be identified and returned home for burial.
