I remember helping dig Robert out of the communications bunker when it took a direct hit. We thought he had the million dollar wound - a crushed shoulder. It would get him out of the hell hole of Khe Sanh and with some rehabilitation back in the states where he'd be fine in the future. We were shocked and saddened when we heard a few days later that he had died. I enjoyed talking with him whenever I had a chance. He was very intelligent and a spiritual person.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 11 March 1968 the Khe Sanh Combat Base received a number of mortar, artillery, and rocket rounds - as happened almost every day. Three Marines were killed in the attacks and a number of others were wounded ... at least one of the latter, Corporal Robert Payne, died as a result of his injuries. The four men were
