LCpl Otte, 2226466 USMC, was serving in Co L, 3d Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d Marine Division, FMF when he was mortally wounded on Thursday, 7 Sept 1967 by rocket or mortar fire in Quang Tri Province of the Republic of South Vietnam. He is listed on "The Wall" in Washington, DC Panel 26E-Row 030. He is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Blair Township, Grand Traverse County, Michigan. A Marine Corps flag is flown over his grave site.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Early on 07 Sep 1967 the 3/4 Marines at Con Thien lost four men to 152mm artillery fire:
  • LCpl Gary L. Moore, Lineville, IA, Lima 3/4
  • LCpl Richard L. Otte, Traverse City, MI, Lima 3/4
  • HN Randolph M. Gamet, Canton, MO, H&S Company
  • Pvt Allen D. Gailey, Murray, UT, Mike 3/4
Later in the day a Mike 3/4 patrol had contact with an NVA unit about a kilometer south of Con Thien, losing 12 more Marines in that engagement:
