During the time of his death 7th Comm was in charge of security for the south perimeter of Hill 34. All the Marine units that were on that side of the hill had to supply men to provide security for a month at a time. During that time they were attached to 7th Comm. I was with another unit, 1/11, and was assigned there the same time that Lcpl Nystul was there representing 7th Comm. The job of security was not on the line but to work patrols and ambushes for that period. Lcpl Nystul was on one of those night ambushes when he was shot and killed by friendly fire. I was not on that ambush but I was with the Marines that responded to that firefight. I did not know him well but I thought that he should be remembered.

A Note from The Virtual WallThe 7th Comm Bn's final report on the incident in which Lance Corporal Nystul was killed contains the following statement:"7th Comm Bn ambush observed one (1) enemy moving east to west near ambush site. Two Marines circled behind enemy to force him into ambush. Two other Marines moved from their assigned position and entered kill zone. When the ambush was 'sprung' one Marine was caught in ambush kill zone and hit by friendly fire. Enemy was not hit and escaped into Cam Hoa 2." |
