A Note from The Virtual WallAlthough formally assigned to HQ Company, 1/44th Arty, SP5 Nakashimo was with B Battery 1/44 at the time of his death. Operation LAM SON 719 was an ARVN move west along Highway 9 into Laos with the intention of disrupting traffic down the Ho Chi Minh Trail into South Vietnam. While US ground troops did not participate in the Laotian incursion, they did mass along the SVN/Lao border to provide artillery and other support. According to the Army TAGCEN file, SP5 Nakashimo was killed by artillery or rocket fire at grid coordinates XD754352. The 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division After Action Report contains the following entry:"270015H-270020H, XD754352 (5km SE FSB Style). The unit received unknown type and number of incoming rounds; at 270310H-270320H they received unknown number of RPG rounds. Counterbattery artillery was fired at suspected enemy location at XD748331 and XD755335 with unknown results. There were 1x US KIA and 7x US WIA."SP5 Nakashimo, posthumously promoted to Staff Sergeant, was the soldier killed in the action described above.
