26 Dec 2002 On 3 Sep 1967, my father was flying an F-105D (tail number 61-0078) as one of a flight of 4 aircraft. The crash site is on a small hill at grid coordinates WE932890 approximately 3 kilometers east of Thanh Lang Xa, Binh Tri Thien Province. His parachute was sighted at grid coordinates WE865884. Notes from The Virtual Wall As stated above, then-Captain Moore was one of a flight of four F-105Ds targeted against a bridge on Highway 15 near the Lao/NVN border. The nearest village is Xom Cul, in the hills some 55 miles northwest of Dong Hoi in southern North Vietnam. His aircraft was hit by antiaircraft artillery fire as he rolled in to deliver his ordnance and Captain Moore ejected in the target area. A SAR helicopter crew sighted his empty parachute and emergency beeper signals were heard, although voice contact was not established. SAR efforts continued through the 3rd and were resumed on the 4th, but Captain Moore was not located. He was classed as Missing in Action. On 28 April 1978, the Secretary of the Air Force approved a Presumptive Finding of Death, changing Major Moore's status to Died while Missing. His remains have not been repatriated.
