06 Aug 2006 At some point after 1976, Fort Devens Army Airfield, located just outside Ayer, Massachusetts, was renamed Moore Army Airfield in honor of an Ayer native, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Douglas Fillebrown Moore. Doug died when he was hit by small arms fire during a landing at a hot LZ. He was piloting the aircraft and had just touched down when an enemy small arms round hit him in the head. Around 2002, Moore Army Airfield was closed down as an airfield. It now is part of the City of Ayer Redevelopment and a training site for the Massachusetts State Police. An unfitting end for a great facility and the memory of an American Hero. I will always remember my time at Fort Devens with the 196th Infantry in 1965 through 1966 and a true American Hero. 10 Aug 2006 A book entitled "Images of America - Fort Devens" by William J. Craig contains the photo shown above. The following caption appears below the photo: "When Fort Devens closed so did Moore Army Airfield. Devens RFTA area then dedicated a former barracks on Sept. 22, 1997, in Moore's Honor. The former barracks was renamed Moore Hall and currently houses Devens RFTA administrative offices." Judging from the photo, I would think Mr. Craig photographed the portrait as it presently hangs in Moore Hall. From Ron Titus New Jersey barny@usa.net
