A Note from The Virtual Wall

According to the 3/7 Marines' Command Chronology for April 1966, on 20 April a VC rallier provided interrogators with information regarding the location of VC elements northwest of Quang Ngai City. By 0400 21 April the 3/7 staff had planned an ad hoc search and destroy operation in the area and by 0830 had begun moving to their embarkation points. The airlift began at 1130 and the battalion's four rifle companies were in the insert LZ by 1330.

Mike 3/7 was first in, and after securing the LZ for Kilo 3/7 began a movement toward the hamlet of Chau Ngai (5). At about 1700 Mike 3/7's lead platoon encountered an estimated VC company in the hamlet and after a sharp exchange of fire withdrew somewhat to regroup and allow air and artillery to work over the VC fortifications. At 1800 Mike 3/7 renewed the assault and in a 30-minute hand-to-hand fight ejected the VC. The two engagements at Chau Ngai (5) resulted in 26 dead VC, 4 Marines killed in action, and 16 Marines medevaced for wounds. The US dead were

  • Sgt Charles B. Norris, Spartanburg, SC;
  • Cpl Fredrick W. Miller, Berlin, OH (Silver Star);
  • LCpl Charles R. Gurtler, Wichita, KS; and
  • Pfc Henry C. Tisdale, Tuscaloosa, AL.
