A memorial from a fellow 1/7 Marine, |
Uncle Richard, It has been 38 years since I last saw you. I was 9 years old and I will always remember you as a strong, kind, good looking man. It was a thrill to have you visit and you always picked me up and twirled me over your head and gave me a big bear hug. The day you died was the first tragedy in my life. When our pastor pulled into our driveway, my mother, your sister, fell to the floor sobbing. We knew what his visit was for. They gave us your Purple Heart and I remember staring at it and thinking "This is all that is left of you that we could hold". There has never been a time when you have not been remembered in my heart. I respect that you gave your life so we could have freedom. You will always be missed. With love ...
