Fred was the sixth child born in the Manly Family. Prior to his birth were five sisters, followed by three more girls. Fred wanted to send each of those born after him back, to be traded for another boy. Finally, he got his wish when number ten, another son, was born.

In response to the question as to why he volunteered for a third tour in Viet Nam, he replied, "I do not want the war to come to the United States where my family is, so I'll go over there and help finish it."

He was a son and a brother we are proud of!

From his sister,

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Corporal Manly died of wounds on 02 January 1968, but The Virtual Wall doesn't know when he was wounded.

On that day, elements of the 1st Cavalry Division were engaged at An Tinh in Binh Dinh Province, losing six men:

  • 1st Bn, 50th Infantry:
    • SGT Jose A. Silveira, Turlock, CA, B Company;
    • PFC Gerald F. Riedlberger, St Paul, MN, B Company; and
    • PFC William E. Stainer, Columbus, OH, D Company.

  • 1st Bn, 5th Cavalry:
    • SGT Terry W. Birmingham, Trumann, AR, B Company;
    • SGT Tommy G. Stover, Wilmington, CA, B Company; and
    • SGT Gary E. Clayton, Oklahoma City, OK, C Company.
If Corporal Manly was wounded and died on the same day, he probably was serving in a forward artillery observer team with one of the units above.
