16 October 2001 How sorry our family was to hear that you died serving your country in the Vietnam War. I have fond memories of you. I especially remember you and my dad taking walks. I always imagined you were talking about planes. Maybe you're still talking in Heaven, since he went to be with the Lord in 1984. We were proud of your accomplishments, as I am sure your family was. 13 April 2002 Dear Friends and Family of Steven R. Major, My name is Lauren Theiss. My eighth grade class went to Washington DC over the weekend and went to the Vietnam Memorial Wall. I just wanted to say that I am sorry for the loss of a son, husband, and friend. He was very brave and was proud to be an American. Notes from The Virtual Wall Captain Robert F. Conley and 1st Lt Steven R. Major were flying an F-4B (BuNo 150459) out of Chu Lai on a close air support mission near Phu Bai, south of Hue. Their aircraft was hit by ground fire during their first pass at the target and crashed, killing both crewmen. Captain Conley was the son of a well-known Marine aviator, Brig Gen Robert F. Conley, who commanded Marine Fighter Squadron 312 in 1965 and Marine Air Group 11 in 1966, both at Danang.
