The database page for James Edward Magel
It has been almost 37 years since Jim was died of his wounds received in a ferry mission of troops in the bush. He was the co-pilot and had the the unfortunate fate of his picture appearing on the front cover of LIFE magazine in April 1965. A story is included as a journalist was aboard and recorded the events leading up to his death. Jim, you will always be in our memories. You were a pleasure to know and go through training with at Pensacola. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

I went through flight training with Jim Magel. He owned an old motor launch with several other MarCads while a flight student at Pensacola, Florida. The boat was usually at Perdio Bay or in the waterway going to Pensacola Bay. Wendell T. (Ted) Eliason and Gerry McKay were also regulars on the boat. They are also on Panel 1E with Jim. All four of us were room mates at Saufley Field. I'm the only one left. All four of us soloed in April or May, 1962, some 40 years ago. Jim liked a good time, had a great sense of humor and of all things liked gardening. Remembered and missed. I have that Life Magazine.
