A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 2nd Bn, 5th Marines Command Chronology for July 1968 reports that Echo and Fox Companies, 2/5 moved to the An Hoa area on 24 July, the point elements for the battalion. On the 25th the remainder of 2/5 was relieved and began movement to An Hoa, arriving on the 26th. On arrival, the Battalion Commander found that Echo 2/5 was engaged at Phu Nhuan about 4 kilometers northeast of the An Hoa airfield and immediately committed additional forces. By 6:00 pm Echo, Fox, and Hotel Companies were committed to clearing the village area. Seven Marines were killed in the engagement:

    • LCpl Allen J. Grovner, St Simons Island, GA
    • LCpl Rocco R. Isaac, Philadelphia, PA
    • LCpl Jack S. Smith, Perry, FL
    • Pfc Eric Parker, Cleveland, OH

  • F Company:
    • SSgt James R. Long, Hancock, MI

  • H Company:
    • LCpl Richard W. Hanley, Philadelphia, PA
