A note from The Virtual WallOn 27 Feb 1971, LTJG Larry G. Lewis, pilot, and LTJG James Carroll, radar intercept officer, were scheduled for a night flight. Their F-4J appeared to suffer an engine failure on the catapult shot - one afterburner extinguished - and the aircraft had insufficient end speed off the catapult. As the aircraft settled toward the water, two ejections were sighted. RANGER's SAR helicopter was on scene within moments but could locate and recover only LTJG Carroll. Although search operations continued through the next day, LTJG Lewis was not found.Lewis was held in MIA status temporarily, and was promoted to Lieutenant while in that status, before a finding of death was approved. His remains were never recovered. |
