We always called you "Lucky". You were a great guy to talk to and always had some good war stories to tell, even about Tiajuana, Olongapo and others. Sorry to see that you didn't make it through Nam but I know that, given a choice, that is how you wanted it to be. Semper Fi from all your Buddies in 1st Plt. G-2-9.

A Note from The Virtual WallOn 26 Oct 1967 Corporal Converse R. Lewis died of wounds received from an "explosive device" while serving in Quang Nam Province. At that time Golf 2/9 was at Con Thien in Quang Tri Province, just south of the DMZ.Corporal Lewis apparently was transferred from Golf 2/9 to Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. In early October 1967, 3/5 took responsibility for an area near Danang in Quang Nam Province. During the latter part of the month the 5th Marines conducted Operation ONSLOW, a multi-battalion search and destroy operation, in the Danang TAOR. The 5th Marines Command Chronology for October 1967 contains the following entry for 26 Oct: "261215H: K CO 3/5 S&D at 995610 detonated 1 booby trap believed to be 60mm [mortar] round. Searched area with negative results. 4 USMC WIA."While no names are given, it seems likely that Corporal Lewis was one of the four Marines wounded and that he died soon after being wounded. |
