A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 20 Jan 1968 the 1st AMTRAC Battalion was supporting a joint operation with the 2nd ARVN Regiment and US Navy elements at My Loc on the Cua Viet River when the ground forces encountered a large NVA force on the north side of the river. The ensuing fight became bitter indeed, with the armored tractors providing both friendly firepower and targets for the NVA. Although the combined US/ARVN force eventually cleared the NVA from the area, 12 Marines from the 1st AMTRAC Bn were killed in the action:
  • 2ndLt Richard P. Reynolds, New York, NY
  • Cpl Warren H. Ralya, Shalimar, FL (Navy Cross)
  • LCpl Donald F. Parker, Dalton, GA
  • LCpl Michele M. Roseberry, Marysville, OH
  • LCpl Rick D. Deeds, Carleton, MI
  • Pfc George A. Link, New Kensington, PA
  • Pfc Steve S. Sarossy, Fairview Park, OH
  • Pfc John Washington, Earle, AR
  • Pfc Stephen A. Guardino, Norristown, PA
  • Pfc Gerald F. Lenz, Whiting, IN
  • Pfc Clarence E. Mitchell, Cincinnati, OH
  • Pvt Paul M. Roberts, South Bend, IN
A 13th Marine, Pfc Fred H. Spear of Roseville, Michigan, died on 26 Jan from wounds received in the fight.
