An 18-year-old suburban Chester Marine was wounded fatally eight months after his enlistment, the Defense Department reported Wednesday.

Pfc. Richard D. Lear, of 18 Chestnut parkway, Nether Providence, near Chester, father of an infant son, died in a hospital in Vietnam of wounds suffered while on patrol.

Pfc. Lear left Nether Providence High School last March to enlist in the Marine Corps and was assigned to the First Infantry [sic] Division in Vietnam on Sept. 1.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; his son, Richard Jr.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lear of 601 Ryanard rd., Nether Providence; a brother, John Jr.; four sisters, Sandy, Gail, Kathleen and Jacqueline; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Flanagan; and paternal grandfather, Edmund Lear.
