Notes from The Virtual WallJohn Lavish was graduated from the Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in the Class of 1963 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Marines. Following flight training and a tour at MCAS El Toro, California, Captain Lavish was assigned to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 314 at Chu Lai, where he flew over 150 missions between 27 January and 10 June 1967. At that time he was assigned to the 1st ANGLICO as a ground Forward Air Controller. According to a letter from his commanding officer, LtCol L. W. Larson, "He had been in First ANGLICO a short time. He was attached to the Second Republic of Korea Marine Brigage and particpating in an operation near the city of Quang Ngai with the Korean Marines when he died. His death and that of two members of his tean were caused by an explosion occurring when an armored personnel carrier struck a mine."The three team members who died were
