Bruce was fiercely loving, loyal and protective of his family and friends. Even now, 40 years later, to me Bruce was the happiest, most positive person I have ever known. His energy and laughter were contagious, he was the guy people liked to be around. I'm sure Bruce's great sense of humor and his laughter helped carry him and his fellow Brothers through some dark and frightening days. Bruce loved music and he could sing every word of a song only after hearing it one time. I just know his singing and his animated personality helped lift him and his buddies through many days of sadness and despair. I was told, when Bruce was on the hospital ship USS REPOSE, from injuries sustained in the field, that Bruce and his great friend Joe Drago hoooked up a rig for their IV's so they could walk around the ship to entertain and cheer up the guys who were less fortunate. Bruce told me he carried a deck of cards in his pocket, so when a fellow soldier needed a friend, a distraction or a little taste of home, Bruce would hang out and play cards with them for as long as they wanted. Bruce was my childhood sweetheart, my husband and my friend. Bruce gave me the gift of a little girl he never got to meet. He would have been a wonderful Dad and he would have loved her so much. I was told by Joe Drago's widow that Bruce showed great courage, loyalty and love in the moments before his death. He asked Joe to please tell his wife, daughter and family that he loved them. You left us much too soon and have left an empty space in our lives, a place that can never be filled. We love you, Bruce, forever and always. Thank you for your life and for loving us. Our love for you will never be lost, nor will it ever die.
Love,
From his wife, |
