Norman and I grew up together in Brownsville, Tennessee, and served together in Vietnam with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines. On Thanksgiving Day 1967 I had a platoon size patrol into the DMZ. At about 10:00 we ran into 3 women and 1 man, called for choppers to come get them and take them into Dong Ha. The choppers got there at about 16:00 hours and it was late when we got back to Gia Linh. All the hot chow from Dong Ha was gone - the only hot meal that I was promised the whole time that I was there. But Norman showed up with a can of turkey out of C-rations and left-over cranberry sauce. He said "I wanted you to have as good a meal today as we had". So long ago, so far away - but it seems like only yesterday. You are with me every day.

It was my privilege to serve with Norm Lane in the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines. He was a fine officer and a true gentleman. I ate lunch with him the day he was killed. I have often wondered why such a fine man was killed and I wasn't even scratched. May he rest in peace with God.

A Note from The Virtual WallThe 3/4 Marines Command Chronology for March 1968 contains the following entry for 29 March:"At 291405H [2:05 pm, 29 Mar] C-3 received six rounds of estimated 120mm mortar fire from YD096623 resulting in one KIA, three WIAs medevac and one WIA non-evac. Counter-mortar was fired by artillery and 81mm mortars with good target coverage and unknown results. At 291555H [3:55 pm, 29 Mar] C-3 received one round of estimated 120mm mortar fire from an azimuth of 5100 mils resulting in two WIAs med-evac and three WIA non-evac. Artillery was fired with good target coverage and unknown results."1stLt Lane was killed in the first mortar attack. |
