A Note from The Virtual Wall

In midafternoon 02 June 1971 a "Pink Team" from B Troop, 1/9 Cavalry was alerted to proceed from Bearcat Base to FSB FURR in support of ground troops. A Pink Team consisted of an OH-6 scout helo which would work at low altitude to identify enemy troops and one or two armed helos - usually AH-1G Cobras - which would prosecute any targets found.

In this instance the assigned AH-1G was ready to go, but the OH-6A (tail number 66-17905) needed to be refueled. Because the refueling rig at Bearcat was out of service it was agreed the AH-1 would go ahead to FSB FURR while the OH-1 went to nearby Lassiter Heliport to refuel before joining the AH-1 at FSB FURR. The AH-1 arrived at FURR without difficulty, but after an hour's wait the OH-6 had not arrived. Aware the OH-6 had departed Lassiter some 30 minutes earlier, the AH-1 crew began a search.

The AH-1 crew spotted smoke rising from a field about 2 kilometers north of Highway QL-1 and 9 kilometers west of An Loc Airfield. On arrival it became apparent that the OH-6 had crashed - and that the crash was not survivable. The accident investigation determined the OH-6 had hit high-tension power lines, flipped, and crashed, killing both crewmen: WO Michael A. Lamusga, pilot, and SP4 Danny R. King, gunner, from Sardinia, Ohio.
