Larry had been a Senior Corpsman on Ward 7 South Neurology, Neurosurgery during 1966-1967 when he left to go to Vietnam. I had been on the ward for about 3 weeks when all of a sudden I heard the ward clerk cry out and left her station sobbing hysterically. This was early June 1967. I found out then that Larry had been killed on his first day in-country. My Lt. Commander Rosenquist took it hard. As other Corpsmen got their orders for Vietnam, we had a staff party for them. I volunteered to work their evenings during this time so that they could attend. When my time came, I didn't want to go due to hating to say goodbye, not knowing if I would ever see them again. Out of respect for Lt. Commander Rosenquist, I went. It bothered me deeply then and still does today when I think about it. Larry could have been one of the first Senior Corpsmen who started my training on the ward. I don't know when he left but his dying on his first day left an everlasting impression on me that nothing is forever.
