A Note from The Virtual Wall

OPERATION DECKHOUSE III in August 1966 provided the Battalion Landing Team built around the 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, with their first combat expenience in Vietnam. While the first phase was not productive, Phase 2 (also termed "Operation Toledo") was the second combat landing in Vietnam for BLT 1/26. The BLT operated ashore between 22 and 29 August, locating and attacking a VC base camp and bunker complex. The VC did not stand and fight; instead, they abandoned their base to the Marines.

Never the less, three Marines from Charlie Company were killed on August 28, 1966 and a month later, on 25 September, a fourth member of the Company died of wounds received during the operation. The four were the first combat deaths for 1/26 Marines:

  • Cpl Paul B. Madden, Franklin, NJ
  • LCpl William A. Finkel, Columbus, OH
  • LCpl Bruce L. Kennedy, Santa Monica, CA (DoW 09/25/1966)
  • Pfc Frank L. Barbee, Lockhart, SC
