Although my Uncle John died before I was born, by all accounts he was a standout as a person and a soldier. He was taken away from his family at much too young an age.

I wanted to thank Chris Joyce for his time, effort and thoughtfulness in putting this memorial together. Like Chris, I didn't have the opportunity to meet my father, but luckily through family and friends I know the type of person my father was and how he choose to live his life. Words like honor, love, respect and commitment come to mind from people that were fortunate enough to have known him. From the family that loved him, to his friends and colleagues who served with him there is a profound sense of loss that is difficult to describe. Simply put there were not many men like him. This I do know. My father loved his family to no end, he held his friends close to his heart and his dedication to this great country knew no limit. He was a patriot, a husband and a father. He will be missed and forever in my thoughts.

John was a paratrooper and a Ranger. He was a dedicated officer and loved the Army. I should know - I am his kid brother and the last living member of his immediate family. John went to become a Army Officer and I went and became a Naval Officer and we had several disscusions about which was the best branch of the service. It really didn't matter - we both loved what we chose.

A Note from The Virtual WallMACV's Advisory Team 87 lost two officers on 21 Dec 1966 - LTC James C. McIntosh of Woodside, NY, and MAJ John H. Joyce of Boston, MA.By report, the two officers and an ARVN driver were in a jeep which struck a mine, killing the driver. McIntosh and Joyce were not seriously injured by the mine but were killed in an ensuing firefight with VC troops. |
