Benny Jones was a Hero who sacrificed his life in place of many others. The Gates of Heaven opened wide with "WELCOME HOME" banners when Benny arrived. He was a friend, an athlete, and a HERO SOLDIER.
John Barrett Benjamin Allen Jones rests in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Parkersburg, West Virginia. |
I am Charles Cole. I met Benjamin Jones in the States when we were going through training. We were friends and occasionally talked. I met back up with him in Bien Hoa at a place where we stayed until we were sent up North to our assigned units. We were both assigned to 1st Plt, A Co, 1st Bn, 502nd Infantry. The company had been hit by a sapper attack a week or two before we arrived and had lost a good many men. We were replacements for these soldiers that had been lost. If I remember right, there were 24 of us that were assigned to A Company. We were in the mountains the night Benjamin was killed. I just remember hearing an explosion that night and heard that he had been killed and two or three others wounded. The mountains were a very forbidding and dangerous place to fight the war. They sent us anywhere they thought we could find the enemy, and we often did. I was very saddened by his loss and have never forgotten him. He was a good soldier that did his duty. I believe he had been made a fireteam leader and was fixing to be promoted.
If he had lived he would most probably have been one of our leaders.
