A Note from The Virtual WallThe body of Lieutenant Commander Omar R. Ford, USN, one of 44 officers and men who lost their lives in the 26 October fire, is committed to the deep from Oriskany's flight deck during memorial services at sea in the Western Pacific, 06 November, en route to San Diego, California. On 26 October 1966 USS ORISKANY endured a major shipboard fire which killed 44 officers and crewmen and injured many more. The ship steamed to Subic Bay in the Philippines for temporary repairs before continuing on to the United States for permanent repairs. Eight months later she was again conducting operations off North Vietnam.
