"Greater love no man has than to give his life for his friend."

It has been forty years this month.
Sergeant Blankenship took my place on that recon mission.
We remember and are eternally grateful.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The post-patrol report contained in the 1st Recon Battalion's Command Chronology contains the following summary:
"This patrol covered a period of 77-1/2 hours with 5 sightings totalling 24 VC. 1 contact resulted in 3 VC KIA confirmed and 5 fire missions were conducted resulting in 9 VC KIA probable. There were two USMC KIA and 2 USMC WIA from a VC placed M-16 antipersonnel mine (pressure rigged). The KIAs and WIAs were evacuated and the patrol, reinforced by 4 men, carried out its assigned mission. (Captain BARNES, patrol leader, and Sergeant BLANKENSHIP, assistant patrol leader, were KIA; Sergeant WATSON took command of the patrol)."
The other casualty was Captain Eric M. Barnes of Windsor, Connecticut.

The patrol had a scout dog team with them and the dog was wounded by the mine; the patrol report very carefully states "One scout dog (Chabby) WIA" and that Chabby was evacuated with Captain Barnes, Sergeant Blankenship, and the other two men injured by the mine.
