Prior to joining the U.S. Army, Dennis has been living in Louisville Kentucky where he graduated from High School.

Four men of the 191st AHC died when their helicopter was shot down by small arms fire, crashed and burned, 4 kilometers northwest of Dong Tam.

The aircraft was shot down on 5 June and the men were reported as missing.

They were recovered in the days following, and once identified, their status changed from missing to killed in action (Akers on 20 June; Tejano on 10 June; Turone on 17 June; and Vines on 18 June). The men were:


At the time of his death, Dennis was survived by his parents Vera (Johnson) and Frank D. Akers and his sister Patricia Akers, all of Louisville. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.
